This was my first Anime Convention outside of the Midwest and it was spectacular. The whole weekend was filled with cosplay, photography, great food, meeting amazing people, and of course… cookies and alcohol.

Thursday was a rough flight in. My plane was late due to a mysterious blinking warning light in the plane. After about an hour of trying to find the problem they just realized the light fuse just needed to be replaced. Oh my! The man I sat next to on the plane was a nervous flyer. He kept repeating the sign of the cross. I tried to be nice but I mostly left him to himself. Regan airport is SO easy to navigate and get around. Not to mention my bag was about 5th off the turnstile and I got a cab in a matter of minutes.

The drive to the Omni was beautiful. You can see the capitol, Washington monument, Lincoln memorial, and you drive next/under the Kennedy Center. the_masayume found me right away and introduced me to the amazing girls I stayed with all weekend. We had one king size bed so the girls made me a super adorable bed on the over-stuffed chair with the footrest all lined up. They even had a blanket and pillow all set. Flippin’ hilarious!

Drinking at the Irish Pub across the street immediately followed. I wish I could remember everyone’s name that I saw there. Plenty of hilarious people from West Virginia *flips you off*, a Canadian *caw caw*, and an amazonmandy! I taught all my fellow drinkers how Wisconsin looks just like your hand, how to sing a school girl song involving milking a cow with hand motions, and that a U-per accent is the best thing since sliced bread.

Friday was an early morning cosplaying Emma and taking photos with the stunning animeangel. (umister thank you for the gift from CVS! *dies* I love you!) I popped back into Emma and rushed to sign up for a slot in the hallway craftsmanship contest. I have never entered one and the girls convinced me it would be cool to try. While waiting I talked with the amazing winterssnight and her friend. I couldn’t be more blown away by her costumes and talent. It was so neat getting to meet her.

The craftsmanship judges were so nice and cool. If anything I was just excited to meet the one who works for Cirque and Disney. She encouraged me to audition for Disney as a face character or performer. (She knew my dreams!!! lol) I need to try to contact her. She was such a neat theatre type person to get to talk to. The judges also said a Tiki type in anal retentive sewing style. T_T *is honored* We all did a little dance for pinking sheers as well.

The evening was filled with drhikaru who would not let me stop laughing. Seriously! We went on an epic journey to Bucca’s restaurant. It took forever to walk there. We crossed a huge bridge walked through a swanky neighborhood, and pasted the Hilton hotel which I recognized from a previous trip. Each time we asked for directions we were told it was only 5-10 more minutes. LIARS! They were all in on a huge prank. I know we were being recorded. By a little camera on the back of the pig-dog we saw being walked ahead of us. waynekaa thank you for an amazing dinner! Reiko and her fiancé Garry were beyond adorable too.

Saturday: Our room was so tired we slept in like lazy bastards. I put on Princess Neptune and went shopping. Before the con I thought I wasn’t going to buy anything. Nice sentiment, but wrong. I am most proud of the contacts I purchased. Photos with EBK and rushing around with drhikaru. We even had lunch with the masque judges as they were working! It was so neat. I eventually got back into Emma in time for the masquerade and sat with Garry the fiancé and drhikaru in the front row. It was so awesome seeing so many friends perform. I nearly went horse from cheering. Fiona and I were the ones everyone on stage could here telling them to exit off stage left, not right. Lol

I was so proud of all my friends who won so many awards! How talented are my friends? SUPER talented. I also had a huge shock of winning the Novice Craftsmanship award for the hallway contest. I couldn’t stop shaking the judge’s hand. lol I know there is drama already about a maid costume winning the award. I’m sorry some people are angry. But I seriously worked so hard on that, drafting my own patterns for sleeves, hat, and apron, making Victorian corset and underclothes. My first costumes were made by my mother or a friend’s mother. So yes, I am a novice. I’m going to write my sewing teacher from college a letter to let him know about the award after I’m done with this report.

Saturday night was me playing photographer with Fiona’s super hot Urd. Humping winners and eating pizza very late in our room as we all cheered for Frisky Dingo.

Final shout outs:
Amazonmandy – I’m so sad we didn’t get to hang out more. I had a birthday card for you!!!! And cookies. I shared the cookies with roommates when I couldn’t find you. But know I made them for your hot ass!

Fiona – I freaking love you. That’s all I can say at this point. We will play dress up in each other’s costumes next time!

Manda – A million THANK YOUS! We’ll drink more next time and hang out more.

All the girls in the room – It was awesome getting to know you. You all are so funny and talented. I mean a room full of artists? Wow, I felt honored to be there with you. The few of you who were sick, feel better!

Henry – Thank you for dinner. I hope we can all do it again!!!

Animeangel – Thank you for the photos.

Dia – I can’t believe I only got to say hello

Ryoko – I need a chin photo with you at some point.

Pixiekitty – Ponies barffing rainbows!

Reiko and Garry – It was a pleasure getting to eat and chat with you!!!!!!

Everyone else I can’t remember at this point. I’m sorry! I loved the hugs and hilarity.

Quote of the con – “Hi I’m from Wisconsin!!!!!!! I’ll show you where on my hand!”

I realized that I never posted photos of my final project for my theatre makeup and wigs class. We had to create prosthetics, wigs, and a costume for a character from a play or of our own creation. The class produced some really amazing pieces. I created a mermaid-ish underwater princess type character. I made scales our of foam and added latex scales for my hairline. Prosthetics were hand painted before the test. The dress I pulled from the costume shop stock but I did sew the sheer cape/coat thing. This project took over my life! lol The scaly ear/fins are celophane singed with incense. The wig was a quick pick up at the shop where I would buy my makeup. I happened to have a can of blue hair color spray and just went at the wig with it last minute. I know all cosplayers gasp in horror, but it worked for the look. I just wanted a tint. The crown was a freaking tacky ugly mess.

SCARY FISH WOMAN!

Sooooo I look scary oldish, have a crooked nose, a unibrow, used soap to cover eyebrows, and stippled my lips to make them look older. Always age your neck when you use aging makeup. You can ruin your look by not including your neck. Also, put your crepe hair on FIRST. Then makeup. As you can see, it doesn't stick well to cream makeup.

This was an experimentation day. We were required to give ourselves "Asian eyes" with medical tape. HURTS when you take it off! Also takes forever to get right. Mine were some of the best but I still have those bumps in the tape! Half of my forehead is aged with tissue covered in liquid latex. The other half was cotton with liquid latex over it. Liquid Colodian was used around the end of the eyes. You stretch the skin, apply it, let your skin go, and watch wrinkles form! (Also hurts.) This time we used wax to cover our eyebrows and derma-wax to make bumps on our noses.

Using both latex and a foam latex mold method we created different prosthetic pieces. Most people just did a nose. I did a nose with Star Trek inspiration and horns. I used liquid latex to make the bumps on my face. They were NOT very successful. I "futzed" with them too much. They were modeled after a National Geographic photo of tattooing and self scarring.

I'm not very happy with how this makeup turned out. We realized HOW HARD it is to blend prosthetics. You need to get the edges very very very thin. But hey, first-ish try. I had to cast my face 3 times to get a proper mold to model off of. (Long story for another time.) The first horns didn't fill all the way with the foam, it set too quickly. Last horns broke the mold because it dried out in the oven.

ps - The foam latex process smells like CAT PEE!

Our characters had to be from a play. “The Skriker”, written by Caryl Churchill, was first performed at the Royal National Theatre, London, on January 20th, 1994. Skriker, the character, is described as “a shapeshifter and death portent, ancient and damaged.” Skriker has the ability to journey from the Underworld to the present world above, and is as damaged as the Earth currently is. She heads a group of other faerie type creatures.
At one point Josie arrives with Skriker in the Underworld to a feasting table of lavishly dressed people and creatures. This is all false glamour and clothes appear to be rags, the food becomes twigs and beetles, and beautiful people have claws and scary faces. The Skriker is now a “fairy queen, dressed grandiosely, with lapses”.
I won't post my WHOLE explination paper for you. lol

Give me your child.

Churchill or Shakespeare... both provide awesome characters to design.

I'm finally posting some of my work from over the semester in my Makeup class. I'm sorry this photo isn't better. I only got one good photo of the makeup and she kept tipping her chin up. Let me pose you like a doll! lol

I made the braces out of jewlery wire and pieces along with fabric paint, glued to a set of false teeth. I'm damn proud of those. I also made her the Betty "B" necklace to wear along with the glasses and wig. Yay for props helping your makeup presentation!
